Coimbra City Council launches tender to reinforce video surveillance system with installation of 38 more cameras

June 26th

The public tender to extend the video surveillance system with the installation of 38 more cameras, distributed over two areas of the city: Baixa and Parque Verde do Mondego, is now underway. With an execution period of 60 days, the basic value of this procedure is 398,233.05 euros, plus VAT at the legal rate in force. In this way, the system in the city will increase from 17 to a total of 55 cameras, covering the entire area of the @Baixa Coimbra project, in order to protect people and property.

After a long bureaucratic process, Coimbra City Council will extend the city’s video surveillance system and increase the number of cameras from 17 to 55. The locations where the cameras will be installed are targeted at the areas with the highest crime rates, according to statistics from the PSP’s Coimbra Metropolitan Command, and will mainly be in the city center, now covering the entire project area @Baixa Coimbra, funded to the tune of 1.2 million euros by the PRR as part of the Digital Business Districts.

The extension of the video surveillance system will also cover the banks of the Mondego river, in areas that have been the target of vandalism. Through this new route, these locations will be monitored by the PSP District Command, on Avenida Elísio de Moura, where the recording and control system is installed.

The mayor of Coimbra believes that, “after this long process, which required a great deal of effort and commitment” from the municipality, this process will “finally move forward”, which “will be a fundamental step for the security of Coimbra’s urban area”.

It should be remembered that, after around two years, the Ministry of Internal Affairs approved the project at the beginning of 2025, following an opinion from the National Data Protection Commission. More recently, a favorable opinion was also obtained from the Regional Coordination and Development Commission, in what was naturally a long and complex process of coordination between Coimbra City Council, the Public Security Police and the Ministry of Internal Affairs, in conjunction with the National Data Protection Commission
