Coimbra City Council organizes visit to the archaeological heritage of the Pátio da Inquisição on October 28th

October 20th

The Coimbra City Council (CM), through the Archaeology Office, is promoting an accompanied visit to the Pátio da Inquisição on October 28 at 2:15 p.m., as part of the municipal program to enhance and publicize the city’s archaeological heritage. The initiative aims to show the results of the interventions carried out in this historic space, which have helped to deepen our knowledge of the history of Coimbra and the country. The visit is free and requires registration.

The visit proposes a tour of the places where the main archaeological work carried out during the rehabilitation processes of the Pátio da Inquisição building took place.

The itinerary of the visit begins in the main courtyard, followed by the basement of the so-called Central Wing, the cloister and interior of the Visual Arts Center (West Wing) and the well (East Wing). The event will be enriched by the presentation of various images of the interior of the building and the evolution of the archaeological work carried out there.

The visit is free, lasts two hours and registrations, up to a limit of 30 people, can be made by email [email protected] until 5pm on October 27.

The choice of date is particularly symbolic, as it was on October 28, 1547 that Cardinal Henry published the index expurgatório (index), a document that marked the functioning of the Portuguese Inquisition and the control of intellectual and religious production at the time.
