The Chiado Building of the Coimbra Municipal Museum will be open until midnight next Friday, September 26, to mark the European Researchers’ Night (EIR). Located in Rua Ferreira Borges, in the city’s downtown, the space joins the program of this international initiative, which in Coimbra spreads over several streets and squares with dozens of activities linked to science and culture.
During the night, visitors will be able to (re)discover the Telo de Morais collection, made up of Portuguese paintings, porcelain, furniture and sacred art. Among the highlights are the Chinese porcelain and 19th and 20th century painting sections, with works by some of Portugal’s leading artists.
The public will also have access to the temporary exhibitions currently on show in the Chiado Building. The exhibition “20 years of Archaeology in Drawings – Records of a Past for Future Memory”, which will be inaugurated on Wednesday, September 24, at the Almedina Gallery, presents two decades of work by the Coimbra City Council’s Archaeology Office, through graphic records, documents and projects that bear witness to the study and preservation of local heritage.
The exhibition “A Man Among Men”, organized in partnership with the Machado de Castro National Museum as part of the Coimbra Museum Network, brings together part of the Cristos collection by Maria Helena and Luís Teixeira. With around three hundred pieces produced between the 16th and 21st centuries, the exhibition reflects the diversity of artistic and religious interpretations of the figure of Christ over five centuries.
The night-time opening of the Chiado Building is part of the programming for the European Researchers’ Night in Coimbra, which this year is taking place under the motto “SCIGLO – Science for Global Challenges”. Between Largo da Portagem and Praça 8 de Maio, the city center will be transformed into a “Science Route”, with 93 meeting points for researchers and the public, interactive experiences, games, talks and activities for all ages.
