Replacement of luminaires in downtown Coimbra completed as part of FlexIP pilot project

August 6th

On July 29, Coimbra City Council completed the replacement of more than 140 public lighting fixtures in the downtown area, as part of the FlexIP pilot project, developed in partnership with E-Redes. The intervention focused on “lantern” type luminaires, which have now been replaced by new generation equipment with LED technology and a point-to-point control system.

This system allows for the individual management of each luminaire and the automatic adjustment of the luminous flux, according to variables such as the time of night, road traffic or the needs of the public space.

The main objectives of the replacement were to reduce the energy consumption associated with public lighting; lower operating and maintenance costs; the possibility of real-time monitoring; and adapting the lighting to different contexts of urban space use.

The phase now completed in Baixa complements a first intervention carried out in Quinta de S. Jerónimo, where 170 luminaires with intelligent control have been installed (46 street luminaires and 124 garden luminaires).

These two areas serve as demonstration zones within the scope of the FlexIP project, and are integrated into a logic of testing intelligent lighting management solutions, supported by the Municipality of Coimbra through the #Coimbracitylab initiative.

At the same time, a procedure is underway to hire an energy services company to replace 23,027 luminaires with LED technology throughout the municipality. A maximum period of six months is expected for the implementation of this operation, which will include luminaires with functionalities similar to those tested in the pilot project.

The intervention in Baixa is also part of Action 6.6 of Coimbra’s application to the Digital Commercial Neighborhoods program, which includes the development and experimentation of intelligent lighting solutions applied to the urban and commercial fabric.
