Almalaguês weaving on display in the SHIFT Welcome Center window

August 26th

The window of the SHIFT Coimbra project’s Welcome Center, located on Rua Ferreira Borges, in the city’s downtown, is hosting, until mid-October, an exhibition of Almalaguês weaving, which was recently awarded the European Heritage Prize. The exhibition aims precisely to mark the recent distinction awarded to the application “Almalaguês: weaving tomorrow from the tapestry of time”, winner of one of the European Cultural Heritage Awards / Europa Nostra 2025, co-financed by the European Union’s Creative Europe program.

The initiative is the result of a collaboration between Coimbra City Council, Associação Herança do Passado and @Baixa Coimbra – Bairro Comercial Digital de Coimbra and aims to give visibility to the work done to preserve and promote the Almalaguês Weaving, recognized as intangible cultural heritage of great historical and social value.

The exhibition, which will be on display in the Welcome Center window until mid-October, features traditional pieces produced by the weavers of the parish, keeping alive ancestral techniques passed down between generations. Visitors will also be able to find information about the European prize, current projects and local points of sale, namely the Herança do Passado Association store on Rua Direita.

The central aims of the winning project are to enhance traditional weaving, social cohesion, inclusion and the strengthening of intergenerational and multicultural dialogue. It is part of the work developed by SHIFT Coimbra, a European project that brings together local and international partners to promote innovative solutions for sustainability, culture and tourism.
