Coimbra City Council celebrates Carlos Paredes’ centenary with music at bus stops

October 20th

Citizens and visitors to Coimbra can, since yesterday, October 15, (re)discover the timeless music of Carlos Paredes at the city’s main bus stops. The initiative by Coimbra City Council (CM), implemented by its Museology Division, in conjunction with the Coimbra Municipal Urban Transport Services (SMTUC), is a tribute to the legacy of the master of Portuguese guitar, who would have celebrated his 100th birthday this year.

The initiative includes a total of 40 posters with the iconic image of Carlos Paredes, which have been distributed throughout the city’s main SMTUC bus stops. Each poster includes a QR Code, which allows you to access and listen to some of the Portuguese guitar master’s most emblematic albums.

Eight albums have been chosen. Among the works selected are “Asas sobre o mundo”, “Guitarra portuguesa”, “Concerto de Frankfurt”, “Espelho de som”, “Movimento perpétuo”, “Na corrente”, “Uma guitarra com gente dentro” and “O melhor de Carlos Paredes”.

Distributed at strategic points in the city, these posters aim to bring the public closer to the unique work of Carlos Paredes, making his music more accessible and inviting everyone to listen, reflect and celebrate the richness of Portuguese culture.

With this action, Coimbra pays tribute to the genius and sensitivity of an artist who continues to inspire generations and indelibly mark the history of national music.

It should be remembered that, since the beginning of the year, the centenary of the birth of guitarist Carlos Paredes has been marked by the municipality with diverse cultural initiatives. Musical and dance shows, exhibitions, presentations, editions and reissues of books and a commemorative bus were some of the actions of the municipality to mark the life and work of the guitar master, who was born in Coimbra on February 16, 1925.
