Manifesta 17 presented in Coimbra with Rua da Sofia as one of its epicenters

September 18th

The 17th edition of Manifesta – European Nomadic Biennial, which will take place in Coimbra in 2028, was presented today, September 17. The session took place in the Cloister of the Colégio da Graça, in Rua da Sofia, which will be one of the epicenters of this important international event.

The ceremony was attended by the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Margarida Balseiro Lopes, the mayor of Coimbra, José Manuel Silva, the vice-rector of the University of Coimbra, Delfim Leão, the director of the Coimbra Plastic Arts Circle (CAPC), Carlos Antunes, and the director of Manifesta, Hedwig Fijen.

The ceremony took place in the Cloister of the Colégio da Graça, in the emblematic Rua da Sofia, an especially symbolic setting for the announcement. Rua da Sofia, a historic center of education and culture, represents the kind of heritage spaces that Manifesta 17 aims to activate. The biennial proposes to work on several of these iconic sites along Sofia Street, rethinking their role in contemporary community life.

Manifesta takes place every two years in different European cities, exploring the relationship between contemporary artistic practices and the cultural, urban and social conditions of the host territory.

The 2028 edition will be held in Coimbra, as announced in August, and will be developed in close connection, in an unprecedented way, with the Anozero biennial, organized since 2015 by CAPC, the city council of Coimbra and the University of Coimbra.
