Coimbra celebrates European Researchers’ Night on September 26

September 22th

The European Researchers’ Night (EIR) returns to Coimbra on Friday, September 26, under the motto “SCIGLO – Science for Global Challenges”. Between 5pm and midnight, the city’s downtown will be transformed into a “Science Route”, with 93 meeting points for researchers and the public, from Largo da Portagem to Praça 8 de Maio, passing through Ferreira Borges and Visconde da Luz streets.

About 600 researchers from more than 30 centers at the University of Coimbra, representing all scientific areas, are taking part in this edition, with demonstrations, experiments, talks, games and other interactive activities. The initiative also has the collaboration of around 70 volunteers, mainly PhD students, who will present their “Object with Science” and support the public throughout the event.

About 50 stores in Baixa are also joining in the program, keeping their doors open until midnight. Visitors will also be able to explore NEI Coimbra’s webapp, with QR codes available at each point along the route, allowing them to accumulate check-ins and qualify for prizes.

Among the night’s special moments will be the celebration of the 8th anniversary of NEI Coimbra.anniversary of the PubhD Coimbra, scheduled for 9pm at Liquidâmbar.

This year’s edition was presented today, September 19, at a press conference in Largo da Portagem. The panel included speeches by Ana Santos Carvalho, coordinator of NEI at the University of Coimbra, Maria Carlos, director of the Culture and Tourism Department of Coimbra City Council, and Orlanda Duarte, vice-president of the Agency for the Promotion of Downtown Coimbra.

The Municipality’s support for the event translates into institutional presence, with the #Coimbra City Lab project, as well as various logistical supports.

The 2025 edition of NEI is promoted by the SCIGLO Consortium, which brings together nine partners responsible for activities in Coimbra, Braga, Évora and Lisbon. In Coimbra, the event is organized by the University of Coimbra, through the Institute for Interdisciplinary Research, in partnership with the Agency for the Promotion of Downtown Coimbra (APBC) and the City Council. The event is also certified as an Eco Event by ERSUC.
