The “Crochet Social” installation in Rua Fernandes Tomás opens on March 22. This community cultural action, which has been running for 14 years, aims to raise awareness of the problem of the social isolation of the elderly, transforming the street into a space for art, meeting and socializing through the exhibition of crochet crafts.
Inclusion tool
The project highlights the value of crafts as a tool for inclusion and combating social isolation, promoting the encounter between generations and strengthening the sense of community. Year after year, “Crochet Social” is also an expression of the cultural identity of the street and the city of Coimbra, demonstrating how art can contribute to solidarity and the vitality of the urban space.
Starting in 2013, “Crochet Social” has a strong collaborative character, actively involving residents and shopkeepers of Rua Fernandes Tomás, who contribute to the decoration of the public space by collecting materials and installing various pieces, such as bed and patchwork blankets, naperons and tablecloths.
The installation will be up until November
Over the years, the initiative has become an integral part of the dynamics of Rua Fernandes Tomás, acting as an attraction for visitors, tourists and local residents. The installation also contributes to the enhancement of local commerce, by boosting the circulation of people during the months in which it remains on display, until the end of November.
