Coimbra City Council relaunches campaign for responsible adoption of animals from the Municipal Kennel

October 6th

The Coimbra City Council (CM) has relaunched the campaign to raise awareness of the responsible adoption of animals from the Municipal Kennel, an initiative that had its first edition in September 2024. The aim is to reinforce the importance of adopting consciously and to give visibility to the animals awaiting a new family.

The campaign is being publicized on various digital and physical media in the municipality: LED screens next to the São Francisco Convent and on Avenida João das Regras, public service screens, monitors on the SMTUC buses, as well as on the municipality’s website and social media.

The adoption process is simple. It involves a visit to the kennel, technical advice and a brief assessment of the adopter’s suitability. The animals are delivered electronically identified, registered with SIAC, sterilized, dewormed, vaccinated and with an up-to-date health report. The adoption fee is €14.76 for cats and €34.44 for dogs, which corresponds only to the medical-veterinary care already carried out.

The Municipal Kennel is open from Monday to Friday, between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. and from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., and it is also possible to schedule other times by calling 239 493 200 or by e-mail [email protected]. At the same time, “Open Days” have been held once a month on Sundays, with adoption fees waived, as an additional incentive.

The municipality stresses that adopting goes far beyond a gesture of solidarity: it is a commitment to animal welfare and a way of combating abandonment, giving a new lease of life and promoting a more aware and responsible community.
