Metrobus works | Traffic restrictions on Rua Olímpio Nicolau Rui Fernandes

January 12th

Metro Mondego and Coimbra City Council inform that, as of January 13, a new phase of the Metrobus works will begin on Rua Olímpio Nicolau Rui Fernandes, on the section of the Hospital Line, promoted by Infraestruturas de Portugal.

This phase corresponds to the final works of the intervention, including paving the road, making sidewalks, drainage and installation of the channel dedicated to the Metrobus. The work is expected to last several months.

During this period, traffic will be restricted. Traffic will alternate in both directions, through a single lane, and will be regulated by construction traffic lights. Significant traffic delays are expected, so it is recommended that motorists avoid this road whenever possible and take alternative routes.

Whoever wants to access downtown from the military maintenance, in addition to the alternative circuits, will also have the option of traveling through Rua da Manutenção Militar, Rua de Montarroio and Rua Pedro Rocha. In the opposite direction, towards Praça da República, it is recommended to use Rua de Aveiro, Conchada, Rua de Saragoça and Avenida Sá da Bandeira.

Despite the restrictions, access to the D. Pedro V Municipal Market is guaranteed at all times, including the parking lots, loading and unloading areas and the accesses necessary for the normal operation of the market. Access to the PSP police station and other essential services located in the area will also be guaranteed.

Pedestrian circulation will be ensured, with safe and duly signposted routes being guaranteed, leading to alternative crosswalks whenever necessary.

During the restrictions, the SMTUC stops located next to Jardim da Manga in both directions will be temporarily moved to Rua da Sofia. The cab rank located next to the PSP will be moved to Rua Pedro Olaio, next to the Citizen’s Bureau.

Considering the expected constraints, it is recommended that you plan your journeys in advance and use navigation apps such as Waze and Google Maps, where the restrictions are integrated and updated, allowing you to choose the most appropriate route at any given time.

The Coimbra City Council and Metro Mondego would like to thank all residents for their understanding of the temporary inconvenience caused, which is necessary for the implementation of a structuring infrastructure for the city’s mobility.
