“Outdoor” Project returns to Coimbra with work by Joana Ramalho at the D. Pedro V Municipal Market

April 2th

Coimbra joins the “Outdoor’26” project once again, an initiative by the Association for Creative and Artistic Development – P28, which transforms billboards into platforms for contemporary art. The first work, by Joana Ramalho, is already on display on the façade of the D. Pedro V Municipal Market, following last year’s showcase of seven works on the side façade of the São Francisco Convent.

The “Outdoor’26” project, which will circulate through seven Portuguese cities until October, features works by seven visual artists, with a new proposal being revealed monthly. In Coimbra, the project launched with the piece “Untitled (Doubt is part of growth)” by Joana Ramalho. Trained in painting and drawing, the artist’s work is deeply influenced by its relationship with writing and calligraphy.

The large-scale panel ($8 times 3$ meters) is now installed on the façade of the D. Pedro V Municipal Market. It is worth noting that Coimbra participated in this project for the first time last year, with seven works displayed monthly on the side of the São Francisco Convent.

This year’s seven works, specifically designed for this context, will rotate monthly between cities throughout the programming period from April to October. Integrated into daily urban life and on continuous display, the “Outdoor” project transforms these structures into vehicles for artistic enjoyment, promoting widespread access to contemporary art.

In addition to Coimbra, “Outdoor’26” will visit Lisbon, Setúbal, Évora, Faro, Viseu, and Viana do Castelo. Alongside Joana Ramalho, the participating artists include Carla Cabanas, Inês Botelho, Félix Mula, José Pedro Croft, Martinha Maia, and Rodrigo Bettencourt.

Created in 2012, “Outdoor” is a public art project that aims to democratize access to contemporary creation by appropriating spaces traditionally reserved for advertising.

The P28 Association is an organization funded by the Portuguese Republic – Culture / Directorate-General for the Arts, under the Sustained Support Program for the Arts. It is a non-profit cultural association whose mission is to disseminate contemporary artistic practices and, through social and cultural responsibility, promote art within the experience of mental illness.
