Baixa de Coimbra will once again be filled with music and tradition with the Popular Marches next Saturday.
The Popular Marches return to Baixa de Coimbra on June 6th, with approximately 600 marchers and the participation of 10 groups from the municipality and two invited groups. The 2026 edition was presented today, June 2nd, in the Noble Hall of the City Hall, at a press conference attended by the Vice-President of the Coimbra Municipal Council, Miguel Antunes, the President of the Union of Parishes of Coimbra, Carlos Pinto, and the President of the Agency for the Promotion of Downtown Coimbra (APBC), Assunção Ataíde.
In presenting the initiative, Miguel Antunes emphasized that the Popular Marches represent “a living expression of collective memory, creativity, and pride in being from Coimbra.” The Vice-President of the City Council also highlighted the importance of the initiative for revitalizing the city center and traditional commerce, inviting people to “experience the city, visit the shops, shop locally, and rediscover the streets of the city center.”
The parade will travel through several streets and squares in the city center, starting on Rua da Sofia and passing through Praça 8 de Maio, Rua Visconde da Luz, Largo da Portagem, and Rua Sargento-Mor, ending at Praça do Comércio. It is scheduled to begin at 7:45 PM and the event is expected to last until nearly midnight. Performances are planned along the route in Praça 8 de Maio and Praça do Comércio.
Event combines popular tradition and revitalization of the city center
The Popular Marches are co-organized by the Municipality of Coimbra, the Union of Parishes of Coimbra, and APBC, seeking to value the popular traditions associated with the festivities of the popular saints, the associative movement, and the revitalization of the city center.
During the press conference, the Vice-President of the Coimbra City Council also emphasized that this initiative reflects “a vision of a more vibrant, more participatory Coimbra that invests in culture as an engine of development,” highlighting the joint work between the Municipality, the Union of Parishes of Coimbra, and APBC.
This year’s edition will feature the participation of the Tricanas de Coimbra, Marcha de Brasfemes, Marcha de Santa Clara, Marcha de São João Vila Nova, Marcha do Grupo Artístico de Ribeira de Frades, Marcha Popular de Eiras, Marcha de Celas e Olivais, Marcha Infantil de Cernache, Marcha Popular de São Martinho do Bispo, Marcha Popular da Freguesia de Cernache – Marcharte and Marcha Popular da Cegonheira.
Two guest groups will also participate: the Marcha da APPACDM de Soure and the Rancho Infantil da Serra de Ansião.
The Municipality provides logistical support for the event.
The Coimbra City Council will provide logistical support for the event, including route monitoring, increased urban cleaning, provision of technical resources, licensing, institutional promotion, and adjustments to public transport in the area covered by the parade.
