Coimbra joins the Plant Based Treaty and reinforces its commitment to food sustainability.
The Municipality of Coimbra formalized its adherence today, May 30th, to the Plant Based Treaty, an international initiative linked to the promotion of more sustainable food systems and the fight against climate change. The session took place at the D. Pedro V Municipal Market and was attended by the Vice-President of the Coimbra City Council, Miguel Antunes, and Noel Santos, national coordinator of the Plant Based Treaty in Portugal.
The initiative included several events throughout the morning, including an institutional visit to the D. Pedro V Municipal Market, a showcooking demonstration of plant-based food, and a public tasting open to participants.
The Municipality of Coimbra’s adherence to the Plant Based Treaty is part of its municipal strategy for food and environmental sustainability, associated with enhancing the Municipal Market as a space for proximity, responsible consumption, and the promotion of local producers.
The Treaty Promotes More Sustainable Food Systems
The Plant Based Treaty is an international initiative inspired by the principles of the Paris Agreement, which advocates for the transformation of food systems as a contribution to mitigating climate change, through the promotion of plant-based food models and the reduction of environmental pressure associated with current production and consumption patterns.
With this adherence, the Municipality commits to progressively promoting policies and practices aligned with the principles of the treaty, particularly in terms of sustainable food, the enhancement of short production circuits, and raising awareness of more balanced and environmentally responsible consumption models.
Initiative reinforces the value of the Municipal Market
The session also included the participation of the Member of Parliament and spokesperson for the People-Animals-Nature (PAN) party, Inês Sousa Real, and also included moments of public dissemination related to food sustainability and the enhancement of the D. Pedro V Municipal Market as an identity-defining, economic and community space.
